Vincent McCluskey; Seattle, Wash.; Men's Soccer

Vincent McCluskey scored a pair of goals last week to help the Loggers to two big wins in Northwest Conference play. McCluskey is one of three Loggers with three goals and seven points in a balanced scoring attack. “We seem to work well together and give each other equal opportunities,” commented McCluskey. “As the season goes on, somebody might take a lead, but it doesn’t really matter who is scoring as long as we are scoring.” The Loggers have outscored their opponents 10-0 during their current three-match winning streak, going into a big match with Pacific Lutheran this week. “This match is huge. Its basically our next stop on the path to a conference championship so its huge and I’m sure we’ll be ready for it.”

Nate Backes

Nate Backes went on a tear last week, tallying at least one hit in all four games the Loggers played en route to a 3-1 record and a series sweep of Lewis & Clark. Backes had multiple hits in three of the four games and went 3-for-4 in the series finale against the Pioneers on April 13. In that contest he ripped a double and legged out a triple, falling just a homer short of the cycle. With the base knocks he brought in three RBIs for the Loggers while scoring two himself, accounting for five of the Loggers' 11 runs on the day. In all he tallied eight hits, five runs, and eight RBIs last week, hitting for an even .500 average. Thanks to the hot bat, he leads the Loggers in batting average, RBIs, doubles, homeruns, and is tied for the lead in hits. Backes and the rest of the Puget Sound baseball squad travel to Forest Grove, Ore., for a three-game series at Pacific this season.
