Loggers Drop Baseball Opener, 7-5
LACEY, Wash. - A five-run second inning proved to not quite be enough as the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the Saint Martin's Saints, 7-5, in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Saints Field in Lacey, Wash.
The Saints (1-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the first after Shane Shoeneberg doubled to lead things off and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch by Logger starter Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes).
The Loggers (0-1) answered back in a big way in the top of the second. Freshman Charlie Bogart (Beverly Hills, Calif.) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) and Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) to score an give Puget Sound a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) picked up an RBI on a single to right field that scored Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) and then Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) drove in Bogart as well as Zach Girod (Vancouver, Wash./Fort Vancouver) for an early 5-1 Logger lead.
The Saints answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tighten the Puget Sound lead to 5-4 but the Loggers were able to hold on to the advantage until the sixth inning when Jake Owens hit the sacrifice fly to center field to score Andy Cole. After a couple scoreless innings, the Saints found themselves with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when Andrew Braegelmann hit a hard ball towards Crace at third base. Crace managed to scoop up the ball but his throw sailed wide, allowing Seth Drake and Michael McIver to score and give SMU a 7-5 lead.
Senior Kevin Jones came in to pitch the ninth inning for the Saints and got three straight outs to give Saint Martin's their first win of the year.
The Loggers were led offensively by Resnik, who finished the game three-for-four from the plate with an RBI. Duvall looked solid in his first start of the season, despite allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings pitched.
Jeff Brooks collected the win for SMU, allowing one hit in one and two-third scoreless innings pitched. Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on one hit in one and two-thirds innings pitched. Jones collected the save, pitching one inning of no-hit ball.
The Loggers head down to Oregon this week to participate in the Jim Doran Auto Classic, hosted by Linfield College. Puget Sound will kick things off in McMinnville on Friday night when they take on Concordia (Ore.).
