Baseball Splits With #21 Bruins
TACOMA, Wash. - A solid pitching performance in the series opener gave the Puget Sound Loggers a 7-5 win over the 21st-ranked George Fox Bruins before GFU answered back with a 15-2 win in the nightcap of a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday on Logger Field in Tacoma, Wash.
In the opener, the Loggers got on the board in the bottom of the first when Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) reached on an error that allowed Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) to score from second. The Loggers made it 3-0 in the third when Mentor singled up the middle to score Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) and Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison).
The Bruins finally scored in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Pat Bailey. The Loggers extended their lead in to the bottom of the inning when Mentor knocked in Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) and then Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) hit a three-run home run to make is 7-1. GFU score three more times in the seventh to get back within 7-4 and one more run in the eighth was all the Bruins could muster as Puget Sound collected the 7-5 win.
Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) got the win, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings pitched while Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) picked up his first save of the year. Nick Bratney took the loss for GFU, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in seven innings pitched.
In the second game, the Bruins struck early and often, building a 9-0 lead by the middle of the second. The Loggers got on the board in the bottom of the second when Cox hit his second home run of the afternoon to put the score at 9-1. George Fox used yet another big inning in the eighth, including a grand slam by Seth Anderson, to take the 15-2 victory.
Shane Dalgleish got the win for George Fox, allowing two runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched. James Lane (Silverdale, Wash./Avila) took the loss for UPS, allowing 10 runs on nine hits in five innings pitched.
The Loggers and Bruins will go at it again, beginning at Noon on Logger Field in Tacoma, Wash.
