Loggers drop two to No. 14 Whitworth, despite Zerio's five hits

TACOMA, WashingtonChris Zerio finished with five hits – including his second home run of the season - and Collin Maier remained dominant on the hill, but the Puget Sound baseball droped both ends of a doubleheader against No. 14 Whitworth on Saturday afternoon at Logger Baseball Field

Puget Sound 2, Whitworth 4

Chris Zerio hit his second home run of the season, and Collin Maier struck out nine through seven innings, but Whitworth (16-4, 8-3 NWC) survived a late rally to hold on for a 4-2 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Loggers (9-13, 6-8 NWC) trailed, 3-1, entering the home half of the sixth inning when Zerio belted a solo shot over the left field fence to bring the Loggers to within one run. The Pirates got the run back in the eighth inning thanks to a solo home run by Matthew Nelson.

Puget Sound put runners on the corners in the ninth inning, but it couldn't push across the game-tying run. Zerio led off with a single up the middle, and Nathan Backes drew a walk. Nickolas Alarcio's long fly out to centerfield allowed Zerio to tag up and take third, but that's as far as he would get.

The Loggers got on the board first when Cal Muramaru tripled and came home on a groundout by Layne Croney in the first inning.

Maier allowed just three earned runs during his outing, and he was one strikeout shy of tying his career record for strikeouts in a game (10).

Puget Sound 3, Whitworth 6

Chris Zerio finished with two RBI and Cal Muramaru hit two doubles, but Whitworth's three-run sixth inning led to a 6-3 victory over the Loggers.

The Pirates plated a run in the top of the first inning, but Puget Sound struck for two in the home half of the frame. Muramaru doubled to right field, and Zerio followed with an RBI through the right side. Following a steal by Zerio, Nathan Backes ripped an RBI single of his own up the middle.

The Pirates tied the game in the top of the second, and then they briefly claimed a 3-2 lead in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth inning, however, Zerio singled home Nickolas Alarcio to even the score.

Puget Sound threatened to score again the ninth following a double by Alarcio and a walk by Zerio, but both runners were left on base.

Sunday's game between Puget Sound and Whitworth has been moved to 10:30 a.m. in order to stay ahead of the weather.
