NEWBERG, Oregon – Despite scoring in the first inning of both games, the Puget Sound baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at George Fox on Friday afternoon.
Puget Sound 2, George Fox 13
Jack Gries led off the game with a single through the left side, and Cal Muramaru's sac bunt moved Gries into scoring position. Corey Roberts promptly followed with an RBI single to centerfield, giving the Loggers (11-21, 10-16 NWC) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Bruins (16-17, 11-12 NWC) tied the game in the third inning, but the Loggers reclaimed the lead in the fourth.
George Fox scored five times in the fifth inning and plated seven runs in the seventh.
Hughes finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Puget Sound 2, George Fox 3
Cal Muramaru began the first inning with a single through the right side, and he advanced to second on Layne Croney's groundout to the shortstop. Muramaru then stole third base, and Corey Roberts delivered an RBI single.
The Bruins tied the game with a run in the third inning, and they took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.
The Loggers got a run back in the sixth inning. Roberts led off with a single, and Puget Sound loaded the bases following an Ian Hughes walk and an infield hit by Ryan Darrow. James Dejesus knocked Roberts in with a groundout.
The Loggers threatened to even the score in the ninth inning when Mason Quinlan and Muramaru hit consecutive one-out singles, but both runners were stranded on base.
Murmaru, Roberts, and Darrow each finished with two hits. Merle Rowan-Kennedy delivered a quality by allowing three runs through six innings to go along with seven strikeouts.
The series concludes on Saturday, April 15, at 12 p.m.
