McMINNVILLE, Oregon – Makoa Mau earned a complete-game win by striking out a career-high 10 batters as the Puget Sound baseball team beat Linfield, 7-2, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader on the road. The Loggers lost the first game, 12-8.
Puget Sound 8, Linfield 12
The Loggers (9-5, 3-3 NWC) claimed a 4-2 lead after the top of the third inning, but Linfield (11-8, 6-5 NWC) rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the inning en route to a 12-8 win.
Ultsch hit into a fielder' choice that scored Gries, but the bases were loaded again after Ricardo Barraza drew a walk. Tyler Brazelton forced in another run by drawing a base on balls, and Jake Briscoe's RBI single capped off the three-run third inning for the Loggers.
Gries went 3-for-5 and scored three runs, including a solo home run in the seventh inning. Kyle Strash finished 2-for-5, and Barraza went 2-for-4.
Puget Sound 7, Linfield 2
Southpaw starter Makoa Mau was brilliant on the hill for Puget Sound, tossing a complete game while allowing just two earned runs and striking out 10 as the Loggers won, 7-2.
Mau's dominance included a fourth inning when he strike out the side, with all three batters going down swinging.
Nick Ultsch homered for the third time in six games. His solo shot in the fifth inning gave Puget Sound a 4-0 lead.
Mason Quinlan initially put the Loggers on the board on the third inning when his single to left scored Cal Muramaru. Muramaru drove in two more runs in the fourth inning when his single scored both Connor Dunn and Nolan Wiler.
Muramaru (3-for-5), Quinlan (2-for-5), and Ultsch (2-for-4) each finished with multiple hits and multiple RBI.
The series rubber match is scheduled for Sunday, March 11, at 12 p.m.
