Loggers Can't Keep Up With #2 Warhawks
TACOMA, Wash. - The Puget Sound Loggers got a taste of the very top of Division III football on Saturday afternoon, falling to the defending national champions and second-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, 60-7, in a non-conference football game on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers (2-1) fell behind early when UWW's Levell Coppage scored the first of his four touchdowns on the day with 5:58 in the first quarter but the Logger defense was able to break through the line and distract Warhawks kicker Jeff Schebler into failing the PAT. The Warhawks and Coppage scored again with 1:33 left in the quarter but the PAT attempt by Schebler was blocked by Dan Mensonides (Tacoma, Wash./Whittier).
UWW quarterback Jeff Donovan scored with 7:39 left in the first half to take a 19-0 lead. Coppage gave the Warhawks a 26-0 lead heading to the half, using an eight-play, 88-yard drive to take 3:16 off the clock.
In the second half, the Warhawks continued to pour it on, adding 21-points to push the lead to 47-0. The Loggers finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter, Kavin Williams (Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) connected with Brian Eggers (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) for a eight-yard touchdown pass to cap an 11-play, 54 yard drive. The Warhawks added two more scores in the fourth quarter to finish the game up 60-7.
The Loggers were led offensively by Williams, who finished with 13-of-23 passing for 126 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Darrell Stewart (Long Beach, Calif./Loyola) caught seven passes for 95 yards. Silas Paul (Portland, Ore./Oregon) led the team in rushing with 14 carries for 41 total yards. On defense, Mensonides had seven tackles on the game.
Wisconsin-Whitewater was led by 14-of-20 passing for 212 yards from Jeff Donovan. Bruce Langer came in relief at quarterback, finishing three-for-four for two touchdowns. Levell Coppage led the team in rushing with 16 carries for 95 yards. Kyle Supianoski led the defense, finishing with 7.5 tackles on the day, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
The Loggers have a bye week next week before traveling down to California on Oct. 11 to take on Menlo in the Northwest Conference opener.
