Loggers Help Out Tacoma Community
TACOMA, Wash. – Under the guidance of first-year head coach Jeff Thomas and senior leaders Cory Dunn (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) and Duncan White (Lake Oswego, Ore./Sacramento State), the Puget Sound football team spent last Saturday volunteering their services within the Tacoma Community.
With a turnout of more than 25 student-athletes and coaches, the team helped the 6th Avenue Business Owners Association clean up Sixth Avenue between Sprague and Stevens streets. The group split up and started at both ends of the 6th Ave Business District and combed the sidewalks and street for trash. They met in the middle at Union St then headed back out to their starting locations on Stevens and Sprague by way of North and South Seventh Avenues along with the conjoining side streets.
The project was initiated Dunn, who got connected with the opportunity through Puget Sound’s Career Involvement and Activity Center on campus.
“It was cool to see so many guys representing the same Logger football get out and make an impact in the community,” added Dunn.
Dunn and White helped kick off the early Earth Day project at a local elementary by speaking to a group of youngsters and spreading the message that giving back to the community and preserving a clean environment are vital parts of Tacoma. After the kickoff, Dunn and White joined the other Logger volunteers to help clean the front steps of every business on Sixth Ave for a stretch of almost two miles.
Thomas was excited to see the player-initiated project take place.
“It’s great to see the guys give back to the community. If we have the ability to help a greater cause, we believe we should,” said Thomas.
The team service venture was the first of its kind for the current Logger football players and Thomas says that it won’t be the last.
