Back and forth action

Puget Sound holds a 46-39-5 all-time record against the Lutes, but the teams exchanged the coveted Totem Pole Trophy in each of the past two seasons. The Loggers beat the Lutes, 6-2, in 2015 on a Peyton Field that reminded many Puget Sound alumni of the old Baker Bog. Pacific Lutheran topped the visiting Loggers, 31-20, last fall.

Halftime adjustments

Just two games into the season, Puget Sound has shown a knack for making appropriate halftime adjustments. The Loggers were beating Occidental, 13-0, through the first half of Puget Sound's home-opener (Sept. 9), but the Loggers erupted for 41 points in the third quarter en route to a 61-6 triumph. Puget Sound trailed La Verne, 20-10, at halftime in the first game of the 2017 season (Sept. 2). The Loggers regrouped and outscored the Leopards in the second half, 15-13, but La Verne held on for a 33-25 win.

Pack a sack lunch

Defensive lineman Braden Ash leads the Northwest Conference with three sacks this season, and fellow lineman Todd Blakely is close behind with two.

Airing it out

Senior quarterback Tanner Diebold has looked comfortable in continuing the Loggers' tradition of dominating the passing game. Diebold is second in the NWC with 317.5 passing yards per game. As a team, Puget Sound is ranked No. 12 in NCAA D-III with 358.5 passing yards per game.

Double trouble

Six players are tied for the Northwest Conference lead in rushing touchdowns, and two of them are Loggers. Paul Thomas and Vance Wood have both reached the end zone twice so far this season.

Scouting Pacific Lutheran (0-1, 0-0 NWC)

The Lutes' lone game this season was a 27-21 loss at Cal Lutheran (Sept. 9). Pacific Lutheran's Ethan McElderry ran for 61 yards on 11 carries, and quarterback Cole Chandler scampered for two scores while throwing for 175 yards. Parker Trewet and Doug James both finished with seven tackles.
