TACOMA, Washington – Tacoma native AJ Johnson approached 200 receiving yards during the Puget Sound football team's thrilling 45-35 season-opening victory at Claremont-M-S Sept. 1, and the junior was named the first Logger Club Logger of the Week for the 2018-19 year.
The Loggers overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half, in large part to Johnson's two touchdowns. His first score was a 23-yard completion from Nik Bernhardt, giving the Loggers their first lead of the game, 28-21, midway through the third quarter.
Johnson's second touchdown catch stood as the game-winner. He grabbed a 30-yard strike from Murdock Rutledge in the back of the end zone to give Puget Sound a 42-35 advantage with three minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Johnosn's 193 receiving yards and 12 receptions are both career highs.
Puget Sound makes its home debut Saturday, Sept. 8, against Redlands. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
