After a nationwide search that yielded more than 130 applicants, the University of Puget Sound named Jeff Thomas as its next head football coach on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2009 Division III AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year has served as the offensive coordinator for University of Redlands for the past three years before recently moving over to the defensive coordinator position.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be the next head football coach at the University of Puget Sound. I will bring an enthusiastic, well-disciplined approach to the football program,” said Thomas. “I look forward to working hand in hand with our team as we develop the success on the field that our student-athletes already experience off of it.”
Thomas has been a member of the Redlands coaching staff since 2003 where the team has been a conference title contender each year while winning the championship twice in that time. He has worked both sides of the ball serving as coach of the defensive backs and wide receivers as well as serving as special teams coordinator. As the offensive coordinator Thomas helped lead the Bulldogs to various school-record performances, including total offense in a single game with 677 yards on Nov. 3, 2007.
"Puget Sound is very fortunate to have an individual who brings a dynamic level of enthusiasm and confidence to Logger Football,” added Puget Sound director of athletics Amy Hackett. “Coach Thomas has a clear competitive vision for our program and will enhance the overall educational experience for our student-athletes."
In addition to his on the field responsibilities, Thomas is the recruiting coordinator and the athletics department technology liaison. He has also been active in community outreach projects spearheading a blanket and food drive for the San Bernardino Mission, leading two team trips to New Orleans to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and coordinated a seven-day building effort for Habitat for Humanity. Most recently, he organized a project that entailed planting more than 4,000 trees in four days throughout the San Bernardino National Forest.
A four-year letter-winner and senior captain
at Redlands, Thomas began his career as a quarterback but then
developed into one of the most decorated defensive backs in
Redlands history. He won numerous accolades as he helped the
Bulldogs reach the NCAA playoffs in 2002. His play earned him
a spot on the US team in the 2002 Aztec Bowl, an annual game
pitting Division III football all-stars from the United States
against their Mexican counterparts.
Thomas graduated with a bachelor's degree in Government from
Redlands and was named CoSIDA Academic All-District as a senior. In
late 2005, Thomas completed his Master of Arts from the School of
Education at the University of Redlands.
The Loggers athletic program fields 23
varsity teams-more than any other NCAA DIII school in the Northwest
Conference-and is consistently ranked in the top 15 percent
nationally among more than 400 NCAA Division III teams. The Loggers
have captured 37 Northwest Conference Championships in the last
decade, and earned the Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All
Sports Trophy in 2006 and 2007.
Entering his ninth year on the coaching staff Coach Halstead took over duties as Offensive Coordinator in 2004. A familiar face to Logger fans after an outstanding playing career, Halstead was an eight-time letter winner on both the football and baseball teams. He was named to All-Northwest Conference teams five times. He also currently is the outfield and assistant hitting coach for the Loggers Baseball team in the spring. Halstead still holds the single season record for the most receptions in a season. In addition, Halstead played professional baseball during the summer of 2001 before returning to UPS to earn his Masters Degree in Teaching.
Brant McAdams joins the Puget Sound staff as defensive coordinator after two seasons coaching at Trinity (Texas). In 2008, McAdams coached the defensive line for the Tigers while in 2009, he worked with the linebackers. From 2006-08, McAdams was a graduate assistant at Redlands, working with the defensive line before receiving his Masters of Art in Higher Education. A 2006 graduate of Trinity with a degree in History, McAdams played defensive end for the Tigers from 2002-05, earning Second Team All-SCAC honors as a senior.
Ricky Daley returns for his fourth year on the Logger coaching
staff in 2010 after spending three years coaching at Waianae High
School in Hawaii. An academic All-Conference selection at wide
receiver in 1996, Daley was a standout wide receiver at the
University of Hawaii and at Boise State University. Daley graduated
from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1993 and is a
1997 graduate of University of Hawaii with a degree in psychology.
Daley earned a masters degree in counseling education from Antioch
University-Seattle in 2003. Along with coaching at UPS, Daley is
the head girls junior varsity basketball coach at Todd Beamer High
School in Federal Way, Wa.
Ricky and his wife Anuhea have three children: Roycen, Tihaven and
Rixen Ka’ala.
Alex Brenner enters his second season as a coach with the Loggers in 2010. A 2007 graduate of Puget Sound with a degree in Sociology, Brenner played football for the Loggers from 2003-06.
Mark Beller joins the Puget Sound staff in 2010 after two seasons as defensive line coach at University of Redlands, where he earned his Masters of Art in Higher Education. Prior to Redlands, Beller spent one year as a defensive assistant at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. A 2005 graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., Beller played four years on defense for the Green Knights.
Spencer Crace joins the Logger coaching staff in 2010 after four years at quarterback for the Loggers. As a senior, Crace held a 142.4 efficiency rating in nine games played. Completing 64.2 percent of his passes, he threw for 977 yards and 10 touchdowns for the 2009 Loggers. As a coach, Crace will spend his first season working with the running backs.
Tim Olson joins the Logger football staff in 2010. A 2004
graduate of Central Washington with a degree in Education. He
was most recently an assistant basketball coach at Bremerton High
School after two years as offensive coordinator and head basketball
coach at Kingston High School.
Bill Tomlinson joins the Logger coaching staff in 2010 and will
work with the tight ends. A 2003 graduate of University of
Washington with a degree in Political Science and History,
Tomlinson also holds a Masters in Teaching from Puget Sound.
Sean Lipscomb joins the Logger coaching staff in 2010 and will
work with the kickers. A four-time All-SCIAC selection as a
kicker/punter, Lipscomb will be reuniting with former teammate Jeff
Thomas. A 2003 graduate of Redlands, Lipscomb holds several
school records for the Bulldogs, including longest field goal (50
yards), field goals made in a season (15), punting average in a
season (45.2 yards per punt). He earned D3football.com Second
Team All-American honors at punter in 2002 and was also a three
time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
