Whitworth Women Lead After Day One of NWC Spring Invite

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - With four teams separated by just two strokes, the Whitworth Pirates hold a narrow lead following the first day of the Northwest Conference Women's Golf Spring Classic on Monday at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash.

Whitworth was led by an 87 from Liz Martin as the Pirates put together a team-score of 361 to take a one-stroke lead over George Fox. Co-host Puget Sound and Linfield are tied for third with 363, followed by Pacific (372), Willamette (439) and Whitman (444). Lewis & Clark and Pacific Lutheran did not have enough golfers to score.

Individually, Brynn Hurdus of Linfield shot an 83 to lead the 42-golfer field. Whitney Ueno of Willamette is one-stroke back of Hurdus with an 84.  The Loggers were led by an 88 from sophomore Natalie Nakamine (Pearl City, Hawaii/Roosevelt). 

The Spring Classic, which counts for one-fourth of the final NWC standings, will conclude on Tuesday, with the first group hitting the course at 9:00 a.m.

The top golfer for the Loggers in 2008-09, Jordan carried an average of 78.3 strokes per round as Puget Sound had one of the top seasons in school history. "I knew Puget Sound was a great small school in a part of the country that I really liked. I also knew I would be able to continue to compete, which was important to me."
