Whitworth Women Win NWC Spring Classic

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - A pair of top-five performances was enough for the Whitworth Pirates to win the 2009 Northwest Conference Women's Golf Spring Classic on Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash.  Whitney Ueno of Willamette took medalist honors.

The Pirates, who led by just one stroke following Monday, used a 378 on the final day of the tournament to collect the win with a final team score of 739.  Krystal Pitkonen shot an 87 on day two to finish in fourth while teammate Liz Martin carded a 95 to tie for fifth in the individual standings.  C0-host Puget Sound took second with a two-day total of 748 behind a second-place finish from Natalie Nakamine (Pearl City, Hawaii/Roosevelt), who used an 88 on day two to put together a two-day score of 176.

Linfield was third with a score of 752, led by a 176 from Brynn Hurdus, who tied with Nakamine for second place.  George Fox took fourth (754), followed by Pacific (762), Willamette (869) and Whitman (899).  Lewis & Clark and Pacific Lutheran each had golfers participate but not enough to earn a team score.

The NWC golfers now turn their attention towards the 2009 Northwest Conference Championship, which will be held on April 25-26 at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Wash.
