Logger Men Take Third At NWC Golf Championship

McKENZIE RIVER, Ore. - Marc Phillips (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) shot a two-over 74 as the Puget Sound Loggers took third place at the 2009 Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championships to finish in a tie for second in the final NWC standings.

Phillips shot identical scores of 37 both in and out  to finish the two-day tournament with a score of 153.  Tim Bartz (University Place, Wash./Oregon State) shot 75 on the final day while Jordan Hodge (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a 79 to finish with 155 for the weekend.  The Loggers finished day two with a score of 304, seven strokes less than their day one total of 311, to finish the tournament with a score of 615.

Linfield shot 301 on day two with all six golfers shooting sub-80 rounds as they captures the NWC title and the automatic qualification to the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship with a score of 604.  Pacific Lutheran used a 299 on day two, including a two-under 70 from Scott Zhang and an even-par 72 from Kyle Spitzer to jump from fourth into second with 613 strokes.

The Loggers took third with their total of 615, followed by Pacific (618), Whitman (637), Whitworth (644), Willamette (650), George Fox (670).  Lewis & Clark did not have an entry in the tournament.

In the final standings, Linfield took the conference title with 30 points.  Pacific and Puget Sound tied for second with 25 points, followed by Pacific Lutheran (19), Whitworth (15), Whitman (13), Willamette (13) and George Fox (4).

The top golfer for the Loggers in 2008-09, Jordan carried an average of 78.3 strokes per round as Puget Sound had one of the top seasons in school history. "I knew Puget Sound was a great small school in a part of the country that I really liked. I also knew I would be able to continue to compete, which was important to me."
