The University of Puget Sound announced that Matt Robles has
been appointed as the new men’s and women’s head golf
coach. Robles will take over for Dr. Richard Ulrich who
retired following the 2009-10 school year after 13 years of
coaching golf for the Loggers.
“I am very excited and humbled for this new opportunity to
be the head men’s and women’s golf coach and work with
such an outstanding group of student-athletes,” said Robles.
“I look forward to carrying on the tradition and excellence
of Logger golf established by Dr. Ulrich and am thrilled for this
new challenge that awaits.”
Robles has worked in the Puget Sound Athletics Department for
the past five years as the assistant men’s basketball coach.
During that time, the team has had one of its most impressive
string of seasons including a 16-0 Northwest Conference record in
2008-09. Robles has served as the recruiting coordinator for
the team, landing players from six different states. He also
brings the organizational knowledge to run a successful NCAA
Division III program.
“Matt brings a great appreciation and understanding for the
Puget Sound experience and has a tremendous respect for our
student-athletes, “ added Athletic Director Amy Hackett.
Robles’ experience in Division III athletics goes back to his days as a student-athlete at University of California, Santa Cruz. Robles played four years of basketball for the Banana Slugs, starting in 98 of 99 games in his career. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 2005 and later earned his Master’s in Leadership from Grand Canyon University.
Robles inherits a very successful golf program. In 2009, the men’s team finished just two strokes back of Northwest Conference champion, Whitworth, at the NWC Championship. The women’s team advanced to two NCAA Championships in the past four years after winning the NWC Championship in those years.
Both teams consistently earn academic accolades as well. Both
teams combined to have five academic All-Americans in 2010 and the
men’s team earned a prestigious spot on the President’s
Special Recognition List for All-Academic teams.
