Logger Men's Basketball Welcomes Class of 2013

Coming off a historic season that saw the Loggers run through the Northwest Conference season undefeated, the 2009-10 Puget Sound Loggers look to reload for another successful season.  After losing six players to graduation from a year ago, the Logger coaching staff has brought in five outstanding freshman who are expected to contribute as soon as they step on the hardwood.

Gabe Borboa

Borboa, a 6-8 forward from Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif., will also be joining the Loggers for the 2009-2010 campaign. Borboa joins the Loggers after enjoying a successful season with 22-9 overall record, going 10-4 in the very tough Mission League of Southern California, before dropping their final game in the CIF Division IV semi-finals in overtime. Borboa led his team in three categories; averaging 12 points per game, nine rebounds per game, and two blocks per game. The 6-8 forward finished his senior year with First Team All Mission League honors, SecondTeam All-Southern Section Division IV CIF honors, and being names a scholar-athlete award winner at Crespi Carmelite.

"Gabe is an extremely mobile post that can run the floor very well, has great quickness for his size, and is able to finish around the rim," said head coach Justin Lunt.  "We are very excited about his future here and expect him to make an instant impact this season."

Caleb Gauff

Gauff is a 6-5 wing/forward who averaged eight points per game, along with six rebounds per game. Gauff, who hails from Foothill High School in Sacramento, Calif., led his team to a 22-8 overall record before losing in the Northern California Division III Section Finals at Arco Arena. Coached by Drew Hibbs, Gauff was instrumental in the success of the Mustangs by doing the dirty work and things that do not show up in the stat sheets. With the great ability to rebound and defend, Gauff left his mark on a good team that had a great season.   An athlete with a long, wiry frame, Lunt sees nothing but positive things for the future.

"Caleb has a great upside, and is only going to get better with time. Caleb is still growing and has the ability to reach 6-8 before it is all said and done," said Lunt. "Caleb has the ability to come in right way and change the game with his activeness and toughness. With his work ethic and drive to be great, there is nothing but great things for both Caleb and the Loggers."

Thang Nguyen

Nguyen is a 5-9 guard from Highline High School in nearby Burien, Wash. . Thang averaged 12 points (56% from three-point range), two rebounds, and one steal a game for the Pirates in the very tough Seamount League, which included a 31-point performance against Foster HS and 28-points against Mt. Rainier HS. A lightening quick guard who has the ability to shoot the three, Nguyen fits right into the Logger high-paced/up-tempo offense.

"Thang might not be the tallest guy in the world, but he can really shoot the three-ball," said Lunt. "He is so quick off the dribble and can shoot it from anywhere on the floor, once he gets accustomed to our system, he will be very tough to stop."

Phillip Thomas

Thomas is a 6-3 guard that hails from Central Kitsap High School in nearby Silverdale, WA. Thomas, a First Team All Narrows League-Bridge Division, will add instant athleticism and defense to the Logger squad. Thomas was part of a squad coached by Scott McMinds that went 16-9 overall, while going 11-3 in the very tough Narrows League. Thomas averaged 11 points per game, five rebounds per game, two assists per game, and on top of all that, two steals per game for the Cougars.

"We are very excited to have a young man like Phillip join the program," said Lunt. "Phillip is a versatile player that can do a lot of things very well. And besides being a really good basketball player, he has the drive and will to win that not a lot of young men have at his age. We are looking forward to the development of Phillip throughout the next four years."

Riggs Yarbro

Yarbro, a 6-7 forward from Moses Lake Christian High School in Moses Lake, WA, will join the Loggers for the 2009-2010 season. Yarbro is the Washington State 1B Player of the Year after averaging 20 points per game to go along with nine rebounds per game. Yarbro was also Honorable Mention All-State his sophomore year to go along with being all-league his senior and sophomore years, while not receiving these accolades his junior year due to sitting out the season with an ACL injury. His senior year, Moses Lake Christian, coached by Lonnie Brown, finished 23-3 on the way to finishing second in state. Along with his athletic accomplishments, Yarbro was Academic All-State his senior year while being his school's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Valedictorian of his senior class.

"We feel very fortunate to add a skilled big man like Riggs to the family. Riggs can score, defend, knows the game, a consummate teammate, and on top of that, an all-around great young man." Lunt continues, "Many people know about his athletic accomplishments and how good of a basketball player he is, but we are more excited for people to learn about the well-rounded individual that we know."

The Loggers will open the 2009-10 season on Nov. 17 at home against Evergreen State before playing host to two nationally-ranked teams in the Puget Sound Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 20-21.

Kaleb Shelton
Tacoma, Wash.
Lincoln HS

Kaleb followed in family footsteps to attend Puget Sound after playing for brother Aubrey as a senior at Lincoln High School. Basketball wasn't the only reason that Kaleb choose Puget Sound, as the accomplished pianist was familiar with the music program as well. "Puget Sound has a great basketball program, an outstanding music department and an esteemed athletic reputation."
