#18 Loggers Sink #24 Titans, 90-87

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Overcoming a 15-point deficit right before halftime, the 18th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers came back to beat the 24th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, 90-87, in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday afternoon at the UW-Oshkosh Holiday Classic at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wis.

In the first half, the teams stayed tight for the first five minutes but the Titans started hitting the big shots to pull up by 10 points with 8:38 left in the first half, using a three-pointer by preseason All-American D.J. Marsh to take a 29-19 lead.

UWO continued to push the lead, pulling ahead by 15 points with 40 seconds left but a jumper by Nadav Heyman (Corvallis, Ore.) followed by a steal by Edric Egberuare (San Jose, Calif./Milipitas) and a layup by David Aberg (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) brought the deficit to 11 points at halftime, 53-42.

After the Titans continued to control the game for the first few minutes of the second period, the Loggers started to chop away at the lead, using a 12-2 run with four three-points to get back within four points and 67-63.

Puget Sound got within one point with 8:20 left to play on a pair of free throws by senior guard Colin Koach (Portland, Ore./Franklin) that put the score at 73-72. The Loggers tied it up from the charity stripe with 5:20 to play on a pair of free throws from Austin Boyce (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) that put the score at 78-78.

Kaleb Shelton (Tacoma, Wash./Lincoln) gave the Loggers the lead with 4:46 left to play, hitting two free throws to put UPS up, 80-78. The teams continued to battle as Oshkosh kept fighting but the Loggers kept the lead. A pair of free throw’s by UWO’s Marsh got the Titans with one point with 42 seconds to play but Heyman hit the shot from about 15 feet with 13 seconds remain to clinch the 90-87 victory for Puget Sound.

The Loggers were led by 20 points from Heyman, who also added five assists and four steals in the win. Boyce finished with 17 points and eight rebounds on the afternoon while Shelton made nine-of-10 attempts at the charity stripe to score 16 on the game. Freshman Riggs Yarbro (Moses Lake, Wash./Moses Lake Christian) came off the bench to add 11 points. The Loggers shot 81.8% from the free throw line to earn the big road win.

The Titans were led by 38 points and 14 rebounds from Marsh, who kept Oshkosh in the game. Andy Kretsch came off the bench to add 11 points while Cory Wittwer scored 10 points in the losing effort. UWO held a 38-30 advantage in rebounds but committed 20 turnovers to drop their record to 2-2.

The Loggers conclude action at the UW-Oshkosh Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon when they take on Wisconsin-Eau Claire beginning at 1:00 p.m. CST at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wis.
