WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Puget Sound men's basketball team fell 111-77 to Whitman in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams on Friday. Dan Cheldinas led the effort with 12 points and six rebounds while Rex Nelson also had 12 points off the bench.
The Missionaries (5-2, 1-0 NWC) scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back as they held a double digit led the rest of the way. The lead grew to as much as 22 points in the first half and the hosts took a 62-41 lead into the break.
Whitman came out with a hot hand and launched 33 three-point attempts in the contest. They made 10-of-20 in the first half to key the lengthy runs. Over half of their shot attempts and shots made in the first half came from long range.
The Loggers also shot 45.7 percent in the first half. Cheledinas and Nelson each scored 10 of their 12 points in the first half while Riggs Yarbro scored seven of his 11 points in the second half to lead the Loggers. Yarbro also had seven rebounds.
Jackson Clough led the Missionaries with 22 points, keyed by a 12-for-12 effort at the free throw line. Matt Mounier also had 18 points for Whitman and led the long-range effort, hitting three of his eight attempts.
The Loggers head up to Whitworth tomorrow for an 8 p.m. game with the defending NWC champs.
