Loggers Start Fast But Fall At Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. – Riggs Yarbro posted a double-double and Rex Holmes scored 24 points but the Puget Sound men's basketball team fell 94-83 at Lewis & Clark on Saturday. The 24-point effort was Holmes' seventh straight game in double figures, including to 20-plus point efforts in the last three games.

The Loggers (6-9, 1-5 NWC) started hot with an 8-0 run over the first two minutes. The lead great to 11-2 with just under 16 minutes to go in the opening half before the Pioneers (9-6, 3-3 NWC) made a run back.

The Pios responded with a 15-4 run and took a 17-15 lead at the 9:01 mark on a jumper from Ross Erikson. Rex Nelson scored the next three points to reclaim the Logger lead before Erikson went off for six straight points to establish a Pio lead that would never fade the rest of the way.

Erikson finished with 20 points for the Pios but James Hollins scored a game-high 36 points to lead the Pios in the win. Hollins big night came behind a 14-of-17 effort from the free throw line. He also had a team-high eight rebounds.

The Pio lead grew to 10 points just before halftime. The Loggers slashed the lead back into single digits immediately at the start of the second half. The deficit stayed in single digits for the next seven minutes. However, the Pios eventually grew their lead to as much as 18 points when Jason Luhnow's three-pointer pushed the lead to 75-57 with 6:28 to go.

The Loggers slashed the lead back into single digits on a layup from Rex Holmes but would never came closer than eight points down the stretch as the Pios held on for the win.

The Pios used a solid 10-for-21 effort behind the three-point line to fuel the victory. The Loggers struggled from long range in the second half, going 0-for-7 and finishing 3-for-14 in the game.

The Loggers head back into Oregon next weekend to take on George Fox on Friday and Pacific on Saturday.
