TACOMA, Washington – A big 40 point second half lifted the Puget Sound men's basketball team past visiting UC Santa Cruz, 65-52, on Friday night.
The Logger defense held the Banana Slugs to just 29.8% in shooting from the floor including allowing only 10 points the final 10 minutes of the game.
In the first half, the Banana Slugs managed to take the lead until the 12:41 mark in the period. The Loggers then went on a 9-0 run capped off by two made free throws from Shattuck to regain the lead. Santa Cruz evened the score at 21 with 4:20 left in the half but the Loggers were able to pull ahead at halftime, 25-23.
To start the second half, the Loggers went on an 8-2 run that included 3-pointers from Shattuck and Barber. The Loggers never relinquished their lead as they went on a 6-0 run in the half and ended the game on an 8-2 run.
Barber put up 12 points and had six rebounds for the Loggers in the second half. James Osorio shut down Santa Cruz as he came away with 10 defensive rebounds.
The Loggers bested the Banana Slugs in rebounds (41-39) and steals (7-6). Puget Sound finished the game with just eight turnovers.
The Loggers look to keep the momentum going as they travel to take on Portland Bible on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6pm.
