NEWBERG, Oregon – Kohl Meyer logged his eighth double-double of the season, but the Puget Sound basketball team lost at George Fox, 78-77, on Friday night.
Meyer finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and the senior handed out five assists. With the Loggers (10-8, 3-6 NWC) trailing, 76-74, and 17 seconds left on the clock, Meyer had a good look a step-back 3-pointer, but the potential go-ahead shot bounced off the front rim.
George Fox (7-11, 5-4 NWC) corralled the rebound, and the Loggers intentionally fouled to send Dylan Hamlett to the line. Hamlett made both free-throws, but the Loggers kept it interesting in their ensuing possession.
Zach Miller was fouled as he put back an offensive rebound, and the senior converted on the three-point play with two seconds left. Once again, George Fox was sent to the foul line, but Johnathan Doutt missed the first end of a one-and-one. Meyer picked the rebound off the floor, dribbled shy of half court, and his heave at the buzzer went just wide left of the rim.
Puget Sound shot 47.2 percent from the floor, as compared to George Fox's 41.5 percent, but the Loggers' 25 turnovers proved to be too costly.
Puget Sound looks to bounce back at Linfield on Saturday, Jan. 28, for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
