Loggers host the nationally-ranked Whits during senior weekend

TACOMA, Washington – After earning a pair of conference wins on the road last weekend, the Puget Sound men's basketball team has a tougher task at home this weekend. The Loggers host No. 2 Whitman on Friday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. Puget Sound then tips off against No. 6 Whitworth on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse.

In the hunt

Puget Sound remained in the playoff hunt following victories at Lewis & Clark (86-74) and at Willamette (70-62) last weekend. Jimmy Wohrer matched his season high in scoring with 23 points against the Bearcats. He netted 15 points in the win over the Pioneers. Carlos Mancasola totaled 34 points between the two wins. The Loggers did a good job of taking care of the rock, averaging just 10 turnovers last weekend.

 

NWC landscape

No. 2 Whitman (12-0 NWC) and No. 6 Whitworth (9-3) sit atop the conference standings. George Fox (7-5) has a half-game lead over Linfield (7-6) for third place. Linfield, Pacific Lutheran (6-6), Puget Sound (5-7), and Lewis & Clark (5-7) enter the weekend separated by 1.5 games for the final slot in the NWC Tournament.

The Loggers will honor their seven seniors - and respective family – who are playing in their final home of the regular season prior to tipoff against Whitworth on Saturday: Nate Foggy, Andre Lewis, Kyle King, Carlos Mancasola, Kohl Meyer, Zach Miller, and Advit Raghavan.

Scouting Whitman (21-0, 12-0 NWC)

The undefeated Blues are the second-best team in NCAA D-III, according to the most recent D3hoops.com poll. Tim Howell leads the NWC in scoring with 20.2 points per game, despite playing a modest 25 minutes per game. Whitman averages nearly 90 points per game while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor. Jase Harrison is the team's second-leading scorer with 12.3 points, and Austin Butler hold a team-high 5.0 rebounds per game.

 

Scouting Whitworth (18-3, 9-3 NWC)

Whitworth is ranked No. 6 in the country in the most recent D3hoops.com poll. The Pirates' three losses this season have come against Whitman (twice) and Pacific. The Pirates have balanced offense, led by Kyle Roach (16.0 points per game), Christian Jurlina (15.0), and Kenny Love (12.9). Roach averages 5.3 rebounds per game, and Love is dishing out 4.3 assists per game.
