High-tempo Loggers continue conference schedule this weekend

TACOMA, Washington – One of the nation's highest-scoring teams continues its conference schedule on the road this weekend. The Puget Sound men's basketball team plays at George Fox, Friday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. tipoff at Willamette, Saturday, Jan. 6.

National treasure

Puget Sound enters the weekend as the sixth-highest scoring team in NCAA D-III, averaging 99.3 points per game. The Loggers also rank seventh nationally for 3-point field-goals made (146), and fourth in forced turnovers per game (27.4).

 

Way of the Wohrer

Jimmy Wohrer leads the Northwest Conference in scoring with 23.3 points per game. What's more, Wohrer ranks seventh in the country for 3-pointers made (48). He scored a career-best 32 points during the Loggers' 96-86 win over Wisconsin-Stout (Dec. 30), including 26 points in the second half. Shortly thereafter, he was named the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week.

 

Pick your poison

Eight  Loggers have scored in double-digits at least twice this season. Wohrer has reached double-digits in all 10 games, followed by Vieira (seven), Zion Shepherd (five), Stellan Roberts (four), Easton Driessen (four), Walker Shibley-Styer (three), Jeremiah Hobbs (two), and Gabriel Chaikin (two).

 

Freshman rising

Freshman Zion Shepherd had a statement game against No. 1 Whitman (Dec. 2), scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds against the top-ranked team in the country. In his last three games, Shepherd is averaging 13.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, and shooting 61 percent from the floor.

Scouting George Fox (5-6, 1-1 NWC)

The Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Trinity (Tex.), 92-85, Dec. 30. George Fox's 117 made 3-pointers is second to only Puget Sound in the NWC, but the Bruins lead the league in 3-point field-goal percentage (39.1 percent). George Fox is also one of the better teams in the conference at taking care of the ball, and average just 12.3 turnovers per game. Mason Green-Richards leads the team in scoring with 21.6 points per game, and Thomas Rico follows with 15.7. Dylan Hamlett is the top rebounder with 6.5 boards per game.

 

Scouting Willamette (6-6, 1-2 NWC)

The Bearcats have lost three of their last four contests, including a 65-49 loss at Linfield in their most recent game. Willamette's 73.9 points per game is second-to-last in the NWC, but its defense ranks third by allowing 72.0 points per game. Three Bearcats are averaging just over 11 points per game: Brendan McCullough (11.8); Jordan Jenkins (11.3), and Nico Troplent (11.1). Jenkins also averages 8.3 rebounds.
