Loggers to battle top-5 nationally ranked teams this weekend

Tacoma, Washington – Winners in six of its last seven games, the Puget Sound men's basketball team is set to take on a pair of nationally-ranked top-five teams on the road this weekend. The Loggers take on No. 1 Whitman, Friday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m., and battle No. 4 Whitworth, Saturday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m.

Engines revved

Puget Sound has the nation's sixth-best scoring offense, averaging 98.7 points per game. The Loggers have also forced the fourth-most turnovers per game (27.25), made the 10th-most 3-pointers (210), and average the fourth-most offensive rebounds per game (17.0) in all of NCAA D-III.

 

Stealing the show

Gabriel Chaikin came away with eight steals against Lewis & Clark (Jan. 19), which is the third-highest total for a single game in NCAA D-III this season.

 

Stellan the show

Stellan Roberts scored 18 points in each of the Loggers' home wins against Pacific Lutheran (Jan. 16) and Lewis & Clark (Jan. 19) last week. He totaled just 28 minutes between the two games, but shot 14-for-25 (56 percent) from the floor and 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) from 3-point range.

 

Wohrer the scorer

Jimmy Wohrer continues to lead the Northwest Conference in scoring, as he enters the weekend with 21.8 points per game. Among the league's top 15 scorers, Wohrer averages the fewest minutes per game (21.4). He leads the NWC in 3-point field-goals made (66).

 

NWC gets offensive

Following the 2016-17 season, only two NWC teams averaged more than 80 points per game (Whitman and Whitworth). Entering this weekend, five NWC teams average 80 points or more. Whitman is at the top of the NWC with 99.8 points per game, followed by the Loggers at 98.7. Pacific ranks third (83.8), and then Whitworth (83.2) and George Fox (82.9).

 

Scouting No. 1 Whitman (17-0, 8-0 NWC)

Ranked No. 1 in the country by D3hoops.com, the Blues barely held off the Loggers earlier this season (Dec. 2). The Loggers held a 104-103 lead with 2:49 left in regulation, but Whitman outlasted Puget Sound, 111-108. Joey Hewitt is the conference's third-leading scorer with 18.0 points per game, and Tim Howell is fifth with 17.3 points per game. Austin Butler leads the NWC in field-goal percentage (67.5 percent).

 

Scouting No. 4 Whitworth (15-2, 7-1 NWC)

The Pirates are ranked No.4 in the nation by D3hoops.com. Whitworth beat the Loggers, 95-84, in Memorial Fieldhouse earlier this season (Dec. 1). Jimmy Wohrer led all players in scoring with 25 points, but Ben College scored 22 points for the Pirates, and Jordan Lester added 20. Kyle Roach in the NWC's fourth-leading scorer with 17.9 points per game, and Ben Bishop is second in field-goal percentage (61.1 percent).
