Men's basketball has one more game before NWC Tournament

TACOMA, Washington – The 2017-18 regular season might be coming to a close, but the Puget Sound men's basketball team is preparing for more basketball. The Loggers conclude the regular season at Lewis & Clark, Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. Puget Sound has already clinched a Northwest Conference Tournament bid, and the postseason run begins Thursday, Feb. 22.

A tale of two halves

Puget Sound faced a nine-point halftime deficit at Pacific Lutheran Tuesday, but the Loggers came back for an emphatic 84-70 win. Puget Sound has won four of its last five games against the Lutes.


Regionally ranked

The Loggers are ranked No. 8 in the West Region, the NCAA D-III announced Feb. 14. Whitman is No. 1, and Whitworth is No. 6.

The Wohrior code

Jimmy Wohrer continues to lead the NWC in scoring, as he enters the weekend averaging 22.6 points per game. Wohrer cooled off a bit at Pacific Lutheran (Feb. 13), scoring 14 points on 5-for-21 shooting. Before that, Wohrer scored at least 22 points in seven consecutive games. He ranks fifth in NCAA D-III for made 3-pointers (97).


Five-game winning streak

The Loggers enter Saturday's game with five consecutive wins. The streak started Feb. 2 against Willamette in Memorial Fieldhouse. The Loggers have several notable winnings streaks this season. They opened the season with a 6-0 record, won four consecutive games late December through early January, and they look to close the regular season with their sixth consecutive win.


On a national level

Puget Sound ranks among the best in NCAA D-III for several team statistics. The Loggers are eighth in scoring offense (96.8), fourth in forced turnovers (26.2), and third in offensive rebounding (16.96).


Scouting the Pioneers (8-15, 4-10)

Lewis & Clark has lost three of its last four games. The Pioneers lost to the Loggers, 95-87, in their first matchup this season (Jan. 19). Lewis & Clark 42.0 field-goal percentage is second-to-last in the NWC, but its 73.4 free-throw percentage is second in the league. Andrew Vickers is the team's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game. Five Pioneers average at least five rebounds per game: Daelon Floyd (5.6), Zeke Crawford (5.4), Vickers (5.3), and Nico Bricker (5.2).
