WHITTIER, California – Jimmy Wohrer's floater beat the final buzzer as the Puget Sound men's basketball team rallied to beat Chapman, 81-80, Friday afternoon. The game was hosted by Whittier as part of the Holiday Inn La Mirada Purple & Gold Poet Classic.
Puget Sound (2-1) trailed the Panthers (1-2) at the half, 44-41. Chapman's lead grew to 50-43 just two minutes into the second half, but a 3-pointer by Max Basile sparked a 7-0 run that allowed the Loggers to tie the score, 50-50.
Chapman immediately answered back with a 7-0 run of its own, and it led by five points, 80-75, with under one minute left in regulation.
A layup by Zion Shepherd made it one-possession game with 30 seconds left. The Loggers immediately put the Panthers on the foul line for a one-and-one opportunity, but Chapman missed the front end of the bonus.
Stellan Roberts grabbed the defensive rebound, and moments later Wohrer drove to the rim for a layup that cut the deficit to 80-79 with 15 seconds left. Roberts came up with another big defensive play – this time a steal with 10 seconds left. The Loggers immediately called a timeout to set up the game-winning play. Out of the timeout, Wohrer drove down the middle of the lane and hit a floater to win it for the Loggers.
Wohrer led the Loggers in scoring with 26 points, and he shot 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Shepherd added 15 points and six boards, while Roberts came away with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Loggers committed a season-low 12 turnovers, and they shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the floor.
Puget Sound remains in California to take on Whittier Saturday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m.
