Puget Sound welcomes team from Parkland for NWC game

TACOMA, Washington – The Northwest Conference men's basketball season begins when Puget Sound hosts Pacific Lutheran Tuesday, Nov. 27, for an 8 p.m. start.

Three out of four

Puget Sound enters Tuesday's game with three wins in its first four games of the season. The victories came against Old Westbury (Nov. 17), Chapman (Nov. 23), and Whittier (Nov. 24). The lone loss was against Sul Ross State (Nov. 18).

 

Wohrer's way

Jimmy Wohrer was named both the Logger Club Logger of the Week and the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week Monday. Wohrer led Puget Sound in scoring between a pair of Logger wins against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams. His buzzer-beating floater lifted the Loggers to a 81-80 win against Chapman (Nov. 23). Wohrer netted 26 points against the Panthers. The following day, Wohrer led the Loggers in scoring with 22 points as Puget Sound beat Whittier, 89-85. So far this season, Wohrer is the Northwest Conference's second-leading scorer with 22.8 points per game. He is shooting 49.2 percent from the floor, and a ridiculous 57.9 percent from 3-point range.

 

Spreading the love

Four Loggers are averaging at least nine points per game. Jimmy Wohrer leads the way with a 22.8 scoring average, and Gabriel Chaikin follows with 14.3 points per game. Stellan Roberts averages 14.0 points, while Cal Hansen and Zion Shepherd both average 9.0.

 

Cool Cal

Freshman big man Cal Hansen is making an immediate impact for the Loggers. He's playing more than 20 minutes per game, while averaging 9.0 points and 5.3 rebounds. Hansen scored the game-winning basket with 15 seconds remaining in the Loggers' 89-85 win at Whittier (Nov. 24).

 

Free-shirts     

The Puget Sound men's basketball program is handing out free t-shirts in the student section Tuesday. The first 40 fans in the student section for the fourth quarter of the preceding women's basketball game will receive a t-shirt, and an additional 40 fans in the student section at the start of the men's game will get a free t-shirt.

 

Treating to treys

Puget Sound leads the NWC in 3-point accuracy, connecting on a whopping 50 percent of its attempts from downtown. The 13.5 made 3-pointers per game also leads the NWC. Jimmy Wohrer's 22 made 3-pointers is tops in the NWC. Gabriel Chaikin is shooting 56.3 percent from 3-point range, which ranks sixith in the conference.

 

Scouting Pacific Lutheran (1-1, 0-0 NWC)

The Lutes lost to Old Wesbury, 82-74, in the season-opener, but they bounced back with a 96-79 win over Evergreen State. Leighton Kingma is the team's leading scorer with 25.5 points per game, and Conor Geiger averages 13.5. Kingma is also the Lutes' top rebounder with 7.5 rebounds per game, while Jordan Thomas averages 7.0.
