SPOKANE, Washington – Cal Hansen recorded his fifth double-double of the season, and Jimmy Wohrer scored at least 20 points for the eighth time this season, but the Puget Sound men's basketball team lost at No. 6 Whitworth, 98-84, Friday night.
Hansen finished the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Loggers (7-9, 3-4 NWC). The freshman has now scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games. Wohrer netted a team-high 22 points by shooting 7-for-14 from the floor, and he was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Stellan Roberts also scored in double figures for Puget Sound with 13 points.
The Loggers entered Friday's contest as the Northwest Conference's top 3-point shooting team, connect on a little more than 42 percent of their attempts from distance. Against the Pirates (14-2, 6-1 NWC), however, Puget Sound 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from 3-point range.
Puget Sound was resilient throughout the game, even as it faced a large double-digit deficit entering halftime. Whitworth held a commanding 50-35 lead with four minutes left in the first half, but layup by Hansen off an assist by Roberts sparked a 10-0 Puget Sound run. Whitworth held a 52-45 lead at the break.
The Loggers take on another top team in the nation when they tipoff at No. 4 Whitman Saturday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
