Logger Men Picked Third on the Pitch
SPOKANE, Wash. - After losing five starters who earned either First or Second Team All-NWC last season, the Puget Sound Logger men's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the Northwest Conference this season according to the preseason coaches poll, announced on Tuesday morning.
The Loggers will not be without weapons in 2008 as they will be led on the back row by senior Taylor Hyde (Sandy, Utah/Waterford) and junior Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell). On the offensive half of the field, junior Alex Lehecka (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) and sophomore Kyle Benson (Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak) should frustrate opposing defenses after combining for 11 goals and six assists in 2007.
Whitworth has been picked to win their second straight Northwest Conference title, collecting five of eight first-place votes for 65 points. The Lutes of Pacific Lutheran picked up two first-place votes and 56 points for second while the Loggers recorded 48 points for third place in the projected standings. Whitman picked up the final first-place vote and 43 points to be picked fourth, followed by Pacific (31), Linfield (27), George Fox (13) and Willamette (11).
The Loggers open up the season on Aug. 29 when they travel down to California to take on Chapman University. Puget Sound's home debut will come on Sep. 5 when they host Central (Iowa).
