Loggers Fall In Home Opener, 1-0
TACOMA, Wash. - Playing their first home match of the 2008 season, the Puget Sound Loggers feel just short, falling to the Central Dutch, 1-0, in an NCAA Division III men's soccer match on Friday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Dutch (2-1) controlled the offensive flow for much of the first half, recording six shots compared with just one shot for the Loggers. Central got the game's lone goal in the 39th minute when Brett McKensie scored unassisted to give the Dutch the 1-0 lead. Logger keeper Greg Saetrum (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) was strong in net in his first collegiate start, making three of his eventual four saves in the first half.
In the second half, the Loggers were able to turn on the offensive faucet, unleashing 11 shots but Central keeper Greg Foote was solid in net, making all six of his saves in the second half. The Loggers finished with 12 shots, compared with 10 for Central. Puget Sound was called for 12 fouls, compared with five for Central.
The Loggers will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Saint Mary's (Minn.)
