Logger Men Win Double-Overtime Thriller

TACOMA, Wash. - Junior Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont.) scored the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime as the Puget Sound Loggers defeated the Whitman Missionaries, 1-0, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.

The Loggers (8-5-2, 6-2-2 NWC) were on the defensive for the first half as Whitman outshot Puget Sound, 5-0.  UPS managed a few more shots in the second half, still being outshot, 4-3, but the strong play of the defense, including keeper Greg Saetrum (Boise, Idaho/Timberline), forced overtime.  After a scoreless first overtime period, the Loggers finally put the ball in the net in the 109th minute when Peterson took the pass from Taylor Hyde (Sandy, Utah/Waterford) and put the ball past Brett Axelrod for the game winner.

Saetrum finished with six saves on the day to collect the shutout.  Axelrod made three saves on the day, allowing the game-winner in the second OT.

The Loggers will look to get another win on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Whitworth at 2:30 p.m..  With a win over the Pirates, the Loggers can move into first place in the NWC standings.

Another in a long line of solid goalkeepers at Puget Sound, Greg is known for his quiet confidence in net. "Being a Logger represents a lifelong bond. I will always rely on the education and skills I acquired at Puget Sound but I will also cling to the memories and lessons I learned while playing soccer."
