Gauthier leads Loggers in dominant win over Whitman

TACOMA, Washington – Landon Gauthier scored two early goals for the Puget Sound men's soccer team as it cruised to a dominant 3-0 victory over Whitman on Saturday afternoon.

In the second minute, the Loggers were awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box. Gauthier hammered the PK into the upper left hand side of the goal. After multiple other chances for Gauthier, he found the back of the net in the 20th minute. Sean Ryan set up Sam Zisette, who crossed the ball to the far post where Gauthier headed it past the Missionary goalkeeper. Just before halftime, Ezra Kraus fed the ball to Cameron Lorek for his third of the year. Lorek dribbled past several defenders before scoring to give the Loggers a 3-0 lead. Goalkeeper Nathan King made a point blank save in the final minute of the match to secure the shutout win for Puget Sound.

Gauthier's penalty kick goal in the second minute kicked off the match on a high note for Puget Sound (10-3-2, 7-1-2 NWC). Gauthier had three other shots on goal before scoring again in the 20th minute. Ryan and Zisette recorded the assist on Gauthier's seventh goal of the year. Throughout the period, Zisette fired in cross after cross to allow Puget Sound chances to score. The Logger defense was dominate in the first half, holding Whitworth (6-8, 3-6 NWC) to just one shot. In the 42nd minute, Lorek beat three Missionary defenders to score.

Puget Sound started the second half with a 3-0 lead as it continued to outplay Whitman. Pablo Alguindigue nearly scored in the period as Ari Taublieb made several crosses into the box. The Missionary attack picked up as the half went on but the Logger defense blocked three shots. King made a crucial save in the 89th minute to secure the 3-0 shutout win for the Loggers.

The Loggers outshot the Missionaries (14-10) and had more corner kicks (7-2). King recorded his seventh shutout win. Gauthier led the Loggers in shots with six, five of which were on goal.

Puget Sound faces Linfield and Willamette at home on Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 26 both at 2:30pm.
