Loggers score two in second half to defeat John Carroll

ELMHURST, Illinois – The University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated John Carroll University 2-1 in the first game of the Elmhurst Tournament Friday afternoon.

Puget Sound (2-0) and John Carroll (0-1) played a scoreless first half. Despite giving up 10 shots in first forty-five, the Loggers weathered the storm and entered the break level.  

Josh Sonico opened the scoring in the 55th minute. The senior forward received a give-and-go from Ezra Kraus and put his left-footed shot into the net to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. Cameron Lorek added to his season tally in the 70th minute. The sophomore scored his third goal of the year to put Puget Sound in front 2-0.

John Carroll got one goal back on a shot by Jacob Lombardo in the 83rd minute, but the Loggers would hold on to remain unbeaten on the year.

Puget Sound was outshot 15-10, and John Carroll took more corner kicks than the Loggers (11-2). Sonico led the squad with four shots, while goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch recorded four saves.

Puget Sound's next match will be Sunday, September 6, when they conclude play in the Elmhurst Tournament. The Loggers will take on the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 10 a.m.
