TACOMA, Washington – The University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated George Fox 2-1 in overtime on a Sam Zisette golden goal.
In what would prove to be a physical battle, Puget Sound (4-3, 2-0 NWC) and the Bruins (3-5, 0-2 NWC) battled fairly evenly until the 21st minute. Sam Zisette took the ball down the left flank, and a George Fox defender in the box handled his cross. Zisette calmly stepped to the penalty spot and slotted in his shot to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins pulled even in the 29th minute. After a George Fox free kick was not cleared, Joab Logan was able to find the back of the net. The two teams played out the second half without a goal.
In the 99th minute, Josh Sonico battled down the left side of the pitch, beating a defender. The senior crossed the ball to the center of the box where Zisette was waiting to deliver the game winner, and keep the Loggers undefeated in conference play.
Puget Sound outshot George Fox (20-17) and took more corner kicks (6-4). Zisette led the squad with five shots, while goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch (4-2) earned the victory, making five saves.
Puget Sound will next go on the road to Whitworth and Whitman Sept. 26-27.
