TACOMA, Washington – The University of Puget Sound men's soccer team defeated Willamette 4-3 in a high-scoring, open match on Saturday afternoon.
The Loggers (6-4, 4-1 NWC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute after the Willamette goalkeeper Braydon Calder failed to safely clear the ball. Sam Zisette kept the ball in the attacking end for Puget Sound and found Stefan Jansen who put a shot on goal. Calder pushed the attempt on goal wide, but Josh Sonico was there to bury the rebound into the back of the net.
Willamette (2-7-1, 1-4 NWC) answered back just three minutes later when Sebastian Mortimer tapped in a crossing pass from six yards out, but Puget Sound reclaimed the lead six minutes before halftime.
A Bearcats defender was whistled for a handball off a shot attempt from Zisette inside the box, and Vincent Von Luehrte capitalized on the penalty kick. Just four minutes later the Loggers cushioned their lead to 3-1 when Brandon Gonzalez carried the ball down the middle of the field and found a streaking Cameron Lorek on the right side. Lorek drilled his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net.
Puget Sound was awarded its second penalty of the match less than one minute before halftime, but Calder turned away Zisette's attempt as the Loggers held on to a two-goal lead at the break.
The Bearcats closed to within one goal at 3-2 in the 67th minute when goalkeeper Calder took a free kick from inside his own half. Logger keeper Daniel Kirsch misjudged the kick, and it sailed over his head and across the line. However, just three minutes later, Benjamin Whitham gave Puget Sound a cushion with his second goal of the season.
Willamette scored again in the 76th minute on a goal by Royce Romero, to close the score to the final of 4-3.
Eight different players recorded points for the Loggers. Puget Sound outshot Willamette 17-8 while the Bearcats held the edge in corner kicks (6-4). Zisette and Lorek led the squad with four shots, while goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch (6-3) earned the victory, making one save.
Puget Sound next hosts Linfield on Sunday, October 4. The game is set to kick-off at 2:30 p.m. at Peyton Field.
