Men's soccer opens NWC schedule at Pacific, George Fox

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound men's soccer team begins its Northwest Conference slate of games when the Loggers travel to Pacific and George Fox this weekend.  They will take on the Boxers on Saturday, Sept. 17, before playing the Bruins on Sunday.

Puget Sound's last weekend

After opening the season 3-0, the Loggers hosted Evergreen State as the final non-conference match of the year. Puget Sound fell behind 3-0 in the first half. The team fought back to tie the game 3-3, but ultimately fell, 4-3. Benjamin Whitham, Luke Murdock, and Ari Taublieb scored for the Loggers.

 

Nationally ranked

The Puget Sound men's soccer team entered the NSCAA Division III Coaches' Poll this week at No. 24. The Loggers are the only Northwest Conference team to appear in the poll.

 

Goals on goals

The Loggers have scored at least three goals in three of their four games thus far in 2016. Puget Sound's three goals in Saturday's second half was the third time this year the team had scored at least three goals in a period (both halves on Sept. 1).

 

Conference honors

Goalkeeper Wren Norwood was named the Northwest Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance over the opening weekend (Sept. 6). The sophomore made five saves, while keeping two clean sheets, as he played every minute of the three games.

 

Scouting the Boxers

Pacific University is 2-3-0 so far in 2016. The Boxers most recently defeated UC Santa Cruz, 2-1, after falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-1), and Redlands (3-2). Weli Alamillo leads the squad with two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Leyton Thommasen is 2-3-0, making 21 saves while allowing seven goals.

 

Scouting the Bruins

George Fox University is 0-4-1 this season, most recently drawing with Concordia-Portland, 2-2, to break their losing streak which started the season. Joel Schierman, Daniel Alonzo, and Sean Owens have each scored for the Bruins. Ricardo Sotelo is 0-3-0 in goal for GFU, allowing eight goals and making 15 saves in three starts. Austin Burdick is 0-1-1, making 16 saves and allowing nine goals in two starts.
