Sonico's goal sinks the Bearcats

TACOMA, Washington – Josh Sonico scored his third goal of the year, as the University of Puget Sound men's soccer team took down Willamette, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon on Peyton Field.

The Loggers (8-3-2, 5-2-2 NWC) came out in Sunday's match inspired from the whistle, pressing for a goal against the second ranked team in the conference. A shot by Cameron Lorek forced a save by Bearcat (7-5, 5-4 NWC) goalkeeper Josh Fuentes in the 3rd minute.

Puget Sound finally broke through in the 39th minute. After winning a corner kick, Vincent Von Luehrte took the set piece. His ball was placed perfectly in front of the net, and Sonico turned on the ball and fired his shot into the back of the net.

The Loggers managed the second half well. Despite allowing nine shots, the Bearcats only had two shots on goal, and goalkeeper Jacob Palmer and the Puget Sound backline kept Willamette off the scoresheet.

Willamette outshot Puget Sound, 12-8, and also took more corner kicks (8-7). Benjamin Whitham led the Loggers with three shots. Goalkeeper Jacob Palmer (4-1-2) played all 90 minutes, making three saves, and earning a clean sheet.

Puget Sound's next match will be Saturday, October 22, when the team travels to Whitman. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
