M. Tennis Takes Sixth At NWC Tennis Championship

YAKIMA, Wash. - In the final men's match of the day, the Whitworth Pirates ended the season with a win, defeating the Puget Sound Loggers, 7-2, to take fifth place at the 2009 Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Friday at Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima, Wash.

In doubles play, the Pirate team of Joe Wales and Michael Shelton blanked Zac Peeler and Stefan Berglund at the top position. The Logger team of Nick Kelley and Sam Finkleman collected an 8-6 win at the second spot but Whitworth collected another win to take a 2-1 lead into singles.

In singles play, the Pirates took five of six matches to collect the victory. Puget Sound's lone win came at the number four position as Kelley defeated Henry Williams, 6-2 and 6-1.

Whitworth concludes the season with a record of 11-12 while the Loggers finished the year with a record of 7-14.
