Logger Softball Blanks Sun West Opponents
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Getting out of the rainy Northwest for a few days, the Puget Sound Loggers took advantage of the nice weather, blanking a pair of non-conference opponents on their first day of the 2009 Sun West Tournament, hosted by Chapman University. In their first game, Puget Sound defeated Hamilton (N.Y.), 1-0, and then collected an 8-0 win over Grinnell (Iowa) in the second game.
In the first game, the Loggers took advantage of a Hamilton error to get runners on base and a single by Megan Janes (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) drove in Megan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) and in the end, that was all the Loggers needed as they collected the 1-0 win. Sophomore Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) got the win, allowing just three hits in seven innings pitched while striking out nine Hamilton batters.
In the second game, the Logger offense started early. In the top of the first, Victoria Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) doubled to right center to score Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley). Ganes then doubled to center field to score Raeburn and give the Loggers a 2-0 lead. Janes got around to score herself on a Grinnell error as Puget Sound held a 3-0 lead just one-half inning into the game. In the second inning, Grause hit a solo home run to right field to push the lead to 4-0 and the Loggers added three more runs in the third as they began to run away with it. The Loggers final run came in the fourth inning as Raeburn homered to center field as the Loggers collected the 8-0 five inning win.
Grause got the win, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts in four innings pitched. Raeburn and Grause each finished the game three-for-three from the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.
The Loggers take the diamond again on Wednesday morning when they take on 12th-ranked Tufts at 8:30 a.m. and then Rio Grande at 10:45 a.m. All Sun West Tournament games are being played at Peralta Park in Anaheim, Calif.
