Softball Drops Pair At Sun West

ANAHEIM, Calif. - One day after blanking a pair of non-conference opponents, the Puget Sound Loggers dropped a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday at the Sun West Tournament at Peralta Park in Anaheim, Calif.  The Loggers fell to 14th-ranked Tufts, 4-2, before falling to Rio Grande, 6-2.

In the first game, the Jumbos got on the board first in the third inning with two runs to take the early lead.  Puget Sound got within one run in the bottom of the third when Victoria Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) singled in Meghan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) to cut the Tufts lead to 2-1.  Tufts added one more run in the top of the fourth but the Loggers answered back again as Amelia Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) singled in Caroline Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names) to keep UPS within one run.

Tufts added their final run in the top of the fifth and the Loggers had no answer as the Jumbos collected the 4-2 win.  Sophomore Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings pitched.

In the second game, Rio Grande struck first, picking up three runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead.  The Loggers scored in the top of the third when Megan Janes (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) found her way home following a wild pitch.  After one more Rio Grande run in the bottom of the third, the Loggers used an error by the Rio Grande shortstop to score freshman Anthea Aasen (University Place, Wash./Wilson).

Two more Rio Grande runs in the bottom of the fourth put the Loggers out of reach as they fell by a final of 6-2.  Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings pitched.

The Loggers will take on a pair of Panthers on Thursday as they play host Chapman in the morning and Greenville (Ill.) in the afternoon.
