Softball Earns DH Split With Pirates, 9-0 and 2-4

TACOMA, Wash. - Senior Victoria Raeburn (Gladstone, Ore.) belted a three-run home run to give the Puget Sound Loggers a win in game one but the Whitworth Pirates answered back, scoring three times in seventh inning of game two to split a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.

In game one, the Loggers had no problem manufacturing runs as they scored in five of the six innings played.  Raeburn led off the scoring int eh bottom of the first when she singled in Hilary Rice (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) for an early 1-0 lead.  Puget Sound added two more in the second when Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) singled in both Amelia Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, Calif.) and Caroline Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names).  UPS added another pair in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth to take the 6-0 lead.

As Whitworth continued to struggle from the plate, the Loggers finally ended it in the bottom of the sixth when Raeburn hit a bomb to left field to score two other Loggers and give Puget Sound the 9-0 win.  Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) collected the win, pitching six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, four hits and just one walk.  Kelsey Ayers took the loss for Whitworth, allowing nine runs, six of them earned, in five innings pitched with three strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, it looked like the Loggers might be headed for another shutout win as Grause held the Pirates without a hit for the first four innings.  Whitworth finally added a run in the top of the fifth to even the game up at 1-1.  The Loggers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning when Raeburn doubled down the right field line to score Grause.

In the top of the sixth, the Pirates finally rid themselves of their frustrations, scoring three runs with two outs to take the lead.  The Loggers couldn't find an answer in the bottom of the inning as Whitworth collected the 4-2 comeback win.  Sperberg took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings pitched.  Jessica Mangis collected the win for Whitworth, allowing two runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched.

The Loggers and Pirates will go at it again on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.
