TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team ran into a hot-hitting Pacific Lutheran team as the Lutes (32-10, 22-4 NWC) came away with wins of 12-0 and 18-4. The Lutes built early leads in both games to key the pair of run-rule victories.
Game 1 – L, 0-12
Jenica Holt led off the bottom of the first with a single for the Loggers (3-29, 3-23 NWC) but she would be the only Logger to reach base until the fifth as the Stacey Hagensen and Leah Butters combined for the shutout win.
The Lutes scored five runs in the first to put the Loggers in a big hole right out of the gates. Hagensen hit a two-run homer as the third batter of the game to give the Lutes the quick lead. She would finish the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Leah Matsunaga also provided some offensive firepower with a three-run homer in the second to key a seven-run inning.
The Lutes took advantage of six Logger errors in the game by scoring five unearned runs.
Marissa Jeffers led off the seventh with a single but was retired on a fielder's choice and the Lutes completed the shutout.
Game 2 – L, 4-18
The offensive hot streak continued for the Lutes, who hit two grand slams in the game to key the big victory.
Kaaren Hatlen hit the first slam in the top of the second, which gave the Lutes an 8-0 lead. Amanda Hall hit another Lute grand slam an inning later in the top of the third to push the lead to 14-0 after two runs had already scored in the inning. Hall ended the game with six RBI to lead the Lutes.
