LA VERNE, California – Bailee Larson continued her hot start to the season, but the Puget Sound softball team dropped two games at La Verne on Sunday afternoon, 10-5 and 4-2.
Larson hit 4-for 8 with a run and two RBI between both games. She's hitting 6-for-12 with a home run through the first three games on the season.
Puget Sound (0-4) got on the board first with two runs in the third inning. Amber Popovich (3-for-4, R, 2B) and Larson (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI) led off with consecutive singles. Jessica Shaw (1-for-3) advanced both runners with a sac bunt, and Paige Schaffer (0-for-4) reached on a throwing error that allowed both runners to score.
La Verne (4-2) scored seven runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Marissa Jeffers (1-for-3, R) sparked a two-run second inning with a leadoff single, and Lisa Colombo (0-for-2, R) followed with a walk. Amanda Fehr's (0-for-1) sac bunt allowed both runners to advance, and Kristi Nagamine's (1-for-3, 2 RBI) single allowed both runners to score and give Puget Sound a 2-0 lead.
The Leopards scored a run in the bottom of the second, and added two more runs in the third to hold on to the lead for the rest of the game.
Kayla Andrus suffered the loss despite allowing only two earned runs through six innings.
The Loggers make their home debut on Saturday, Feb. 14, with a doubleheader against Northwest University, starting at 12 p.m.
