LOS ANGLES, California – The Puget Sound softball team began the 2018 season with a win at Occidental, and the early innings of both ends of the doubleheader against the Tigers proved to be crucial.
Puget Sound 9, Occidental 4
The Loggers scored three runs in the first inning and put up a five spot in the third inning to win the opening game of the 2018 season, 9-6 at Occidental.
Amber Popovich le off the game by getting hit by a pitch, and she advanced to second on Haley Gray's groundout. Jessica Gott reached base on an infield single, and although Popovich stayed on second, both runners scored on Erica Gott's double to right field. Jessica Shimado added one more run in the stanza with an RBI single that scored Erica Gott.
In the fifth inning, Kaitlyn Webster smacked a two-run double, and she eventually came around to score by stealing home. Gray provided an RBI single to give the Loggers a 7-1 lead, McKenna Johnson touched home plate when Jessica Gott reached base on an error.
Puget Sound 7, Occidental 7
The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was halted. Once again, the Loggers struck early and plated four runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Mackenzie Pearlstein led off the second inning with a double, and Abby Brondos followed with a single. Jenna Llamas ripped an RBI single to score Pearlstein, and Amber Popovich's sac bunt put two runners scoring position.
But for Haley Gray, it wouldn't have mattered where the runners were on base. The senior launched a three-run home run to clear the bases and cap off the big inning.
Gray was one of four Loggers to finish with multiple hits. Camille Goo, Llamas, and Pearlstein each notched two hits.
The Loggers remain in southern California to take on Marymount California, Sunday, Feb. 4, with a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m.
