Loggers split home doubleheader against Northwest

TACOMA, WashingtonMarissa Oda homered and Kasey Stern went the distance as the Puget Sound softball team split its first home doubleheader of the season against Northwest Saturday afternoon.

Marissa Oda hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the shot over the left-field fence stood as Puget Sound's only run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Eagles put two runs on the board in the third inning and added two more in the fifth.

Two Logger underclassmen accounted for all five of the Loggers' hits. Oda, a sophomore, hit 2-for-3, and Mackensie Pearlstein, a freshman, finished 3-for-3.

Puget Sound 3, Northwest 2

The Eagles posted the game's first run in the third inning, but the Loggers scored twice to take a one-run lead in the fourth. Erica Gott led off with a double and took third base on a wild pitch. After Marissa Odor reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, Amanda Fehr smacked a game-tying single and McKenna Johnson delivered a go-head RBI double.

Northwest tied the game with a run in the sixth, but the Loggers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the stanza. Lia Nakamoto and Mackensie Pearlstein led off with consecutive walks. Latera in the inning, Erica Gott drew a walk to load the bases for Haley Gray. Keeping up with the theme for the inning, Gray drew a walk to force in what stood to be the game-winning run.

Gray drew three walks in four plate appearances.

Kasey Stern tossed all seven innings without allowing an earned run for Puget Sound. She allowed seven hits, struck out two, and did not yield a walk.

The Loggers' next doubleheader is at Pomona-Pitzer, Friday, Feb. 16, starting at 12:30 p.m.
