Logger Women Take Lead on Day Two of NWC Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - It was another night of championships for the Puget Sound Loggers on day two of the Northwest Conference Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

In the first event of the night, the Logger women's team of Kenzie Kitson (Durango, Colo.), Sierra Phillips (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton), Elizabeth MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Katie Barton (Boise, Idaho) set a new NWC in the 200 Medley Relay with a B-cut qualifying time of 1:46.93, over a half-second quicker than the previous school record, which was set by UPS in 2002.

In the men's 200 Medley Relay, the Loggers team of Garret Gentling (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood), Aaron Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis), Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary) and Bret Schluederberg (Chapel Hill, N.C.) destroyed the school record they set earlier in the season, posting a winning time of 1:32.00 to set a new NWC record.

The Loggers collected their third B-Cut of the night in the women's 100 Butterfly as MacAfee took second with a time of 58.50 to just meet the provisional qualifying time of 58.79. The Logger men also got a B-Cut in the 100 Fly as Kowalski took second with a time of 50.81.

Phillips took the conference title in the women's 100 Breaststroke with a B-cut of 1:06.10. Paul Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis) won the NWC title on the men's side with a time of 56.45 and brother Aaron took third with a time of 57.31. In the men's 100 Backstroke, Kowalski and Gentling finished one-two, finishing with times of 51.56 and 52.89 respectively.

The Logger women took third in 800 Freestyle Medley but their third place finish was enough to give them a 11.5 lead over Whitworth for first-place in the team standings.  The Logger men are in second place, 17 points behind defending champion Whitworth, with one day left to swim.

The Loggers and the rest of the conference will conclude the 2009 NWC Championships on Sunday. Preliminaries are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. while the final session is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
