Hughes Earns All-America Honors in 100 Breast
MINNEAPOLIS - In his first individual event of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, senior Paul Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis) earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the Championship Final of the 100 Breaststroke on Friday evening at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
Hughes, who swam the sixth quickest time in the morning's preliminary session, kept up with the quick field for the first 75 yards but he seemed to tire on the final stretch, finishing eighth with a time of 56.23. Sophomore Pavel Buyanov of Staten Island set a new NCAA Division III record in the event with a winning time of 54.27.
Junior Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary) swam in the morning prelims in the 100 Backstroke, placing 20th with a time of 51.42, improve his seed time of 51.56.
The meet enters it's final day on Saturday with prelims set for 10:00 a.m. CDT and finals set for 5:30 p.m. CDT.
