Loggers Dominate NWC Sprint Pentathlon

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Junior Hally Roberts (Boulder, Colo./Kenyon College) placed second in the women's portion and senior Paul Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis) took second on the men's side as the Puget Sound Loggers opened up the 2008-09 swim season in grand fashion, dominating the Northwest Conference Sprint Pentathlon on Friday evening in Forest Grove, Ore.

In the women's races, Roberts made quite the splash in her first match for the Loggers.  With the quickest time in the 50 fly (27.97).  Roberts then followed that up with the top time in the 50 backstroke (29.82) and the 50 freestyle (25.44) to finish with a combined time of 3:04.07 in the six-event event.  Elizabeth "Mac" MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) took third with a time of 3:04.07.  Lindsay Nixon of Lewis & Clark won the event with a time of 3:01.48.

In the men's races, Hughes put together the top times in the 50 breast (27.92) as he put together a total of 2:40.90 to finish just over a second behind Jay Jones of Pacific Lutheran.  Garrett Gentling (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood) took fifth with a time of 2:42.35 and Bret Schluederberg (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took sixth with a time of 2:43.24.

The Loggers will remain in Oregon on Saturday when they travel to Portland for the NWC Relays, hosted by Lewis & Clark.
