Loggers Wrap Up Strong Performances at Husky Invite
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A pair of provisional qualifying swims highlighted the Loggers' third and final day at the Husky Invitational on Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
In the Loggers' first event of the evening session, freshman Kenzie Kitson (Durango, Colo.) took third in the "D" final of the women's 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:12.15. The Logger men had three swimmers in the finals of the men's 200 backstroke. Jake Rifkin (Edina, Minn.) took fourth in the men's "D" final with a time of 2:05.96 and senior Garrett Gentling (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood) took sixth in the "C" final with a time of 1:56.85.
Earning a spot in the "B" final with a NCAA DIII B-Cut time of 1:53.51 in prelims was Jackson Kowalski (Keizer, Ore./McNary), who took eighth with a time of 1:54.07 in the final.
In the women's 100 freestyle, junior Hally Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) took eighth in the "D" final with a time of 54.49. In the women's 200 breast, freshman Sierra Phillips (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton) took fifth in the "C" final, recording a time of 2:27.38.
The Loggers were well represented in the finals of the men's 200 breast. In the "D" final, the Loggers were led by Jack Zaharchuk (Portland, Ore.), who took second with a time of 2:21.68. Zach Korte (Solvang, Calif.) took fourth with a time of 2:16.92 while Steve Webber (Sandy, Utah/Rowland Hall-St. Mark's) took seventh (1:24.09) and Erik Doran (Maple Grove, Minn.) took eighth with a time of 2:26.03.
In the "C" final, junior Aaron Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis) took eighth with a time of 2:10.69. Senior Paul Hughes (Ruston, Wash./Curtis) swam his way into the "B' final, and took advantage of the opportunity, posting a B-Cut time of 2:05.32 to take seventh.
The Loggers had three swimmers in the women's 200 butterfly finals. In the "D" final, Elizabeth "Mac" MacAfee (Los Gatos, Calif.) took first with a time of 2:11.30. Teammate Shannon Bradley (Sherwood, Ore.) finished in fifth with a time of 2:14.22. In the "C" final, Kelsey Elizondo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) finished in sixth, swimming a time of 2:10.10.
In the final event of the evening, the Logger men got the crowd excited in the first of three heats in the men's 400 freestyle relay as they outlasted the USC Trojan "C" team to take first with a time of 3:10.96.
The Loggers now take a break for the remainder of 2008. Puget Sound will next take to the pool on Jan. 17 when they play host to the Pacific Boxers.
