Middleton Wins Shot Put At Packed Pacific Twilight
FOREST GROVE, Ore. - With 23 teams and 596 athletes competing, Alverno Middleton (Lakewood, Wash./Clover Park) won the men's shot put to highlight the Puget Sound Loggers effort at the Pacific Twilight Meet on Saturday afternoon and evening at Lincoln Park Stadium in Forest Grove, Ore.
Middleton used a personal-best throw of 51-3 (15.62m) to win the 30-person shot put field. Not only was his throw far enough to win the event but it was also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, the fourth outdoor qualifying mark for Puget Sound this season. Middleton also took 13th in the men's hammer with a throw of 146-10 (44.77m) while teammate Greg Bailey (Beaverton, Ore./Westview) took fifth with a throw of 166-06 (50.76m).
In women's action, Andrea Leiken (Portland, Ore./Sunset) took 12th in the 200m dash with a time of 27.95 and 10th in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.42. Nika Evans (Wayzata, Minn.) was 14th in the 800m run with a time of 2:24.93 while Tameka Smith (The Dalles, Ore./Warner Pacific) was the top DIII finisher in the 5,000m run with a time of 18:48.66.
The Loggers will be in action again next week as the men will travel to Western Oregon for the John Knight Twilight Meet on Wednesday while the women will head up to Seattle on Saturday for the Ken Foreman Invitational at Husky Stadium.
